The itinerary opens with a truly extraordinary sequence: the remote lakes and forests of Bemanevika in the far north — a site accessible only to the most determined birders. Lake Matsaborimena and the surrounding highland forests hold Madagascan Pochard (one of the world's rarest ducks), Slender-billed Flufftail, Madagascan Serpent Eagle, and a host of rainforest endemics in pristine habitat rarely visited by outsiders. This section alone is worth the journey.

From Bemanevika we sweep south through the eastern rainforest corridor (Maromizaha, Andasibe, Mantadia) before heading northwest to the extraordinary wetlands of Lake Kinkony — one of Madagascar's most important and undervisited bird areas, where Sakalava Rail, Bernier's Teal and Madagascan Jacana congregate in numbers.
